Just came across your blog and felt like writing my 2 cents on this issue.

The issue of media responsibility and media control is a very precariously positioned one. While the irresponsible media will keep churning up nonsense as long as there are men to lap it up. But at the same time, it's the media which creates such audiences in the first place.

At the same time, having an ombudsman for the media would result in high handedness and misuse of such a power and more importantly would not protect an individuals right (no matter even if it's Ms. Rakhi Sawant). Having any sort of controlling mechanism is definitely not the solution. In fact, I am of the opinion that even the existing regulations on broadcasting need to be done away with because it breeds nothing but media house dependency on the state.

The only solution I see to all this is education and since the state has under its control primary and secondary education, it would be wiser option for the state to invest (not just money) in education and awareness and try and inculcate independent thought in the next generation. Up till then, it's mayhem and let's use the power turn off buttons on our remotes!

Girishanna, I would compare it with banned medicines. It might give instant relief but in the long run it may cause cancer! Given a chance, any system tends to head for anarchy. That’s natural for human being. So I think conscious media programming is a must for responsible handling of mass sentiments and understanding.

Abhaya, this is squarely a reflection of what audience (i.e. market) demands! Media has to make money to survive and to make money they need to supply what buyers (viewers / readers) demand. Some time back, the extent of coverage of death of Anna Nicole in the US almost made me throw up. Solution - let the market decide what they want - I am hoping eventually the 'yellow' media will remain mediocre and section of media which focuses on excellence will get their meat. Anyways, that is my capitalistic view of letting the market decide who and what survives - debates are welcome.
